Hernias are routinely repaired through the use of a laparoscopic procedure to implant a mesh to reinforce or strengthen the affected area. Ethicon Physiomesh product and Atrium C-Qur have a higher rate of recurrence/reoperation compared to the average rates of similar products. This conclusion follows the analysis of data from two large independent overseas hernia registries.
In response to the data findings Johnson & Johnson, the parent company of Ethicon, recalled all unused stock of Physiomesh in 2016, and issued a hazard alert for those patients who have already had the mesh implanted. Atrium Medical Group has similarly recalled C-Qur composite mesh. Today, the two companies are subject to multiple personal injury lawsuits as a result of damages incurred by patients who have had complications related to the mesh implanted in them during a hernia repair surgery.
