Negotiate lower doctor bills

Next Avenue consumer reporter Caroline Mayer suggests these six ways to negotiate lower doctor bills:

  1. Do your own research to determine the going rate for procedures in your area. Get the billing code from your doctor or dentist to do this. Find out, if you have insurance, what your policy covers.
  2. Talk to your medical provider about fees and provide figures you have seen if their cost seems higher than normal.
  3. Ask about cash discounts. Some doctors and dentists will offer 10-30% discounts.
  4. Ask for a payment plan. Many such plans come interest-free.
  5. Look into financial assistance, even if you do not think you qualify.
  6. Contact a healthcare advocate. There are nonprofit groups and some states, including California, Connecticut and Rhode Island, that have offices staffed with healthcare advocates.
