Do you live near the gulf coast? Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida? You may be more susceptible to the Takata airbag explosion. Why? Because the Takata airbag explosions have been linked to humid weather. This is in addition to design and manufacturing problems along with the use of ammonium nitrate. Essentially, what happens is that humid air enters the inflator and damages the propellant, This damage can cause the propellant to degrade over time and burn faster upon inflation when the vehicle is involved in a crash. The result? The steel is over-pressurized and fragments causing shrapnel to shoot out and potentially injure or kill the occupant.
Takata has recalled over 100 million airbags worldwide. In the United States, there have been approximately 100 injuries and 10 deaths as of July 1, 2016. The recall is not expected to be complete until 2019, THREE YEARS!!!!!!!
