Contigo Recalls 5.7M Kids Cleanable Water Bottles Over Possible Choking Hazard

On Aug. 27, Contigo issued a voluntary recall of about 5.7 million “Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles” over a potential choking hazard. According to the recall announcement published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been 149 reports of the water bottle spouts detaching, including 18 reports of spouts being found in children’s mouths.

The CPSC is advising “[c]onsumers [to] immediately stop using the recalled water bottles, take them away from children and contact Contigo for inspection instructions and a free replacement lid.” The recall applies to 13-ounce, 14-ounce, and 20-ounce bottles that were sold in major retailers including Walmart, Target, and Costco, and online between April 2018 and June 2019. The bottles cost between $9 and $24. Contigo’s website outlines what steps you can take to identify whether your child’s water bottle is affected by the recall and what to do if it is:

Testing Your Water Bottle for Defects at Home

Step One: Visually Determine Whether You Have a Recalled Bottle

Recalled bottles will have all of the following characteristics:

• The spout cover of the bottle is black.
• The base of the spout is black.
• There is no circle indication on the inside of the lid.

Step Two: Self-test the Bottle for Defects

• Push the bottle to open the spout, keeping the lid attached.
• Examine the spout to see if there is a gap between the clear silicone spout and black spout base. If there is a visible gap or the mouthpiece comes off, the bottle is affected by the recall.
• Push the spout base in all four directions, pull up on the spout with one hand, and twist the spout to the left. Repeat each of these for a total of three times. If the mouthpiece comes off at any time, the bottle is affected by the recall.
