Ventura County, CA - A rideshare driver has been taken into custody following an investigation into the assault of an unconscious passenger, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation Originated in November
Authorities say the case began in November 2025, when the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit received reports of an assault that occurred in Camarillo. Detectives identified the suspect as 35-year-old Simranjit Singh Sekhon.
Investigators revealed that Sekhon picked up the victim in Thousand Oaks. Although the trip ended in the rideshare app, Sekhon allegedly continued driving the victim around Camarillo, where the assault took place.
Arrest and Charges Announced
Sekhon was arrested on Tuesday, December 15, and charged with rape of an unconscious victim. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on December 17.
Detectives Seek Additional Information
Authorities believe there may be others affected who have not yet stepped forward. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Mitchell Peterson.
California Sexual Abuse Lawyer Discusses Legal Options for Students Assaulted by Rideshare Drivers
As rideshare use among college and high school students continues to grow, so do reports of drivers accused of misconduct. To help survivors and families understand their options, we sat down with experienced California sexual abuse lawyer Jason Amala. In this interview, Amala explains how students who have experienced sexual assault during a rideshare trip can take legal action, protect their rights, and hold negligent parties accountable.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When incidents like this occur, what legal steps can survivors take against a rideshare driver or the company involved?
Jason Amala, Esq.: Victims have both criminal and civil options. The criminal process handles prosecution, but survivors can also file civil lawsuits to seek financial accountability from the driver and, in some cases, the rideshare company if negligence or inadequate safety protocols played a role. It’s important that victims speak with an attorney as soon as possible to preserve evidence and understand their rights.
Banville: Are there time limits for bringing a civil case?
Amala: Yes, California has statutes of limitations that restrict how long someone can file a claim, though there are exceptions depending on the specifics. An experienced attorney can evaluate whether those deadlines can be extended or paused under certain circumstances.
