It is just amazing. When will people wake up? At the YMCA in Mountain Brook this morning, I was working out on one of my favorite elliptical machines, and Meet the Press came on the TV. David Gregory interviewed Republican Presidential candidate, Rick Santorum.
I watched and read the interview, and once again I was amazed at how hypocritical people can be. What do I mean? Here are some bullet points of Senator Santorum’s quotes:
- Obama policies are oriented toward centralizing power in DC and taking freedom away from the American Public.
- Obamacare shows the administration does not believe Americans can make decisions for themselves.
- I believe in working Americans.
- I believe in free people.
- I believe in free markets.
- Corporations need tax breaks to get the trillion dollars they have overseas back into this country.

So, how is this hypocritical? Well, Senator Santorum supports tort reform and medical malpractice caps on damages. If that is the case, he REALLY doesn’t believe in a free people, decentralization of government and that Americans can make decisions for themselves.
Why? Who makes the decision about an award for a medical malpractice or other tort victim? A jury of Americans. If the United States government passes a law putting caps on damages, the Federal Government (DC) is stepping in for the States and imposing a rule of law which overrides the decisions made by twelve Americans sitting on a jury and listening to the case. This hurts working Americans and helps corporate interests, especially malpractice insurance carriers.
On top of all this, I did a little research on Senator Santorum. Apparently, his wife had a problem with a chiropractor in Pennsylvania and sued for malpractice. The verdict: $350,000.00. Did Senator Santorum and his wife agree to accept $250,000 (the proposed cap) instead of $350,000? NOT!
This is typical, and this is the problem in this country. We are more concerned with ourselves, our party, and victory rather than the country as a whole. The fact that we even begin campaigning and spending obscene amounts of money more than one year before the election is ridiculous. Is it 2011 or 2012? I can’t tell with all the media attention on the 2012 election.
What people really need to do is tune in to HBO on June 27. On that day, a documentary will be shown to the world, and it will tell you the truth about our judicial system and what is happening to this VERY important system. This movie is called "Hot Coffee", and it explains the affects of tort reform on individuals through four stories about various issues: (1) the media and corporate contortion of the Hot Coffee Case; (2) arbitration; (3) malpractice; and (4) political assaults on judicial elections.
