County inspectors have shut down six Utah County spas and pools for violations of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. The act, named after the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker who drowned after being trapped underwater by the suction of a hot tub drain, requires that spa and pool drain systems be retrofitted to prevent users from being tangled or entrapped underwater. Depending on the design of the spa or pool, retrofitting cost estimates range from $500 to $25,000.
The state gave spa and pool owners until December 19, 2009, to bring their facilities into compliance before local health departments could step in and take enforcement action. Utah County extended the compliance deadline by one week and then started taking action. The six facilities currently shut down are:
- Winter Haven Spa (Orem)
- Liberty Square Apartment Spa (Provo)
- Main Springs Day Spa (Orem)
- Elevate Fitness Training Pool (Orem)
- Mt. Timpanogos Village Pool and Spa (American Fork)
- Super 8 Spa (Provo)
If you are a spa or pool user in Utah County and your facility of choice is open, be assured that the pool has been retrofitted if necessary. Elsewhere, however, check with your local health department or inquire at the facility to make sure your spa or pool of choice is Graeme Baker Act compliant.
