Kidde, along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, has voluntarily recalled certain P12000 model smoke detectors manufactured between August 2008 and May 2009. It is believed that an installation problem may render them ineffective in detecting smoke. A complete copy of the news release which includes information on how to identify the detectors subject to the recall can be found on the Kidde website.
