Kevin Black, a 39-year-old molecular neurobiologist at the University of Washington, was killed when a van hit him as he commuted to work on his bicycle. The accident occurred near Northwest 64th Street and 24th Avenue Northwest in Ballard. It is unclear how the accident happened and it is still under investigation. Unfortunately, Kevin is not here to tell his side of the story.Mr. Black’s family has recently filed a wrongful death suit against the driver of the van, stating that she was negligent in making a U-turn, and against Ambient Control Company, the company that employed the driver because she was working for Ambient at the time of the accident. Mr. Black leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.
The grief that follows the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming. Even before the grief has subsided, families often find themselves faced with financial hardship as they try to pay the cost of a funeral and try to adjust to life without a loved one. Death of a family member, especially a bread winner can have devastating legal and financial consequences for the unfortunate victim’s family. In the case of the Mr. Black, the family can pursue loss of earnings that Mr. Black would have made in his lifetime, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship. Seeking compensation from the insurance company and Ambient Control may take longer than expected. Their main objective of most insurance companies is to prolong cases and hope that a plaintiff will resolve the case inexpensively, in desperate financial circumstances .
A tentative trial date for the Black case is set for 2011. But, how does the family survive, financially, while awaiting case resolution?
