In light of the massive Toyota recalls and its problems with sticking accelerator pedals, Congress has been conducting hearings to introduce possible new legislation that would deter auto makers from sub par manufacturing practices.

Congress has proposed the following legislation:

  • Higher civil penalties: The current penality cap is $16.4 million.
  • Enhanced disclosure: Auto-makers must disclose if there are any problems with certain models.
  • Auto black box: required in every vehicle to record everything that happens leading up to and during a crash.
  • Whistle blower protecting: Auto workers should be encouraged to report vehicle defects to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Currently, this is only proposed legislation. For more information, visit the American Association for Justice.
