Delaware State Police are investigating a mass transit tragedy. Two passengers were killed and 48 were injured in a bus accident yesterday that happened as the driver was attempting to exit the roadway onto U.S. Route 13 north from the southbound lane of Delaware State Route 1.

No one onboard the overturned bus escaped injury, including the driver, according to Delaware state police. The assistance of 16 ambulances and emergency medical service agencies were needed to treat crash victims. Passengers with the most severe injuries were airlifted by Delaware and Maryland state police helicopters and taken to local hospitals.

The cause of the Delaware bus crash is still under investigation. Police have not said whether or not speed or distracted driving played any role in the crash, but National Transportation Safety Board investigators acknowledged that the bus accident occurred on a sharp and tight curve where speed has contributed to past accidents.
