# $300 Million Benicar Settlement Reached

Daiichi Sankyo, the Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer of Benicar, has agreed to a $300 million settlement for failing to warn consumers that the blood pressure medication could cause gastrointestinal illness.

Approved by the FDA in 2002, Benicar is a prescription drug [used to treat high blood pressure](https://www.drugs.com/benicar.html?ref=legalexaminer.com), otherwise known as hypertension, in children and adults.

The settlement applies to consumers who took the drug prior to May 17, 2015\.
