Slip and fall lawsuits against bowling alleys have been on the rise. Bowling shoes, designed to slip on the lanes, can become extremely slippery when wet and, now that smoking is no longer permitted indoors, smokers are going outside with their bowling shoes on and the result is more slip and fall accidents occurring. The legislation intended to support bowling alley owners is pitting them against trial lawyers.

The bill which is coming under fire by some, would exempt owners from liability lawsuits from people that fall while wearing their bowling shoes outside, if the alley owners had warning signs posted.

“Alley owners have been hit with escalating insurance costs over the past decade due to the increase in slip and fall lawsuits that involve smokers, banned indoors, who gather outdoors,” according to State Sen. Patrick Gallivan (R-Buffalo).
