What is an IVC Filter?
An IVC filter, also known as a blood clot filter, is a small wire implant designed to catch blood clots and prevent them from traveling to the heart and lungs. They are used in patients who cannot take anticoagulants (blood thinners) and are at risk for pulmonary embolisms.
Five specific products manufactured by C.R. Bard and Cook Medical have been identified in lawsuits:
The Bard Recovery filter-The Bard G2 filter-The Bard G2 Express filter-The Cook Gunther Tulip filter-The Cook Celect filter
They have also been referred to as: The Bard Recovery filter; Bard G2 filter; Bard G2 Express filter; The Cook Gunther Tulip filter; and the Cook Celect filter. Other IVC filters causing problems include the Bard Eclipse, Bard Merdian, and Bard Denali.
These devices designed to prevent harmful blood clots can cause even more deadly complications. These complications may result in the need for additional surgeries, long-term harm, or even death. IVC filters were originally intended for short-term use. However, many patients learn that their filter cannot be safely removed. The filter may have moved or shifted, punctured a vein wall, or become embedded, making it impossible to remove. The longer your filter remains in place, the greater your chances of experiencing a complication
