There have been hundreds of thousands of hip implant devices recalled over the last several years or more due to numerous problems with the device that have led to many patients undergoing revision surgery due to failure rates. As cases continue to increase many patients that have undergone hip replacement surgery are concerned and rightfully so.

The main hip implant giants include: Depuy, Stryker, Biomet and Zimmer have all had products that have either been recalled or led to injuries to patients.

When a hip implant is recalled, the company is responsible to issue a letter to physicians, patients and insurance companies but the disheartening truth is these companies don’t always know exactly which patients have been implanted with their products.

The FDA maintains a searchable database of recalled medical devices, for those patients that do know what implant they have.

In cases where the patient doesn’t know or remember what implant they have, they can start by contacting the orthopaedic surgeon who performed their procedure. Alternatively they can also contact their medical doctor or the hospital in which the surgery was performed.

If your Hip Implant has been Recalled

If you have determined your hip implant has been recalled, speak to your doctor immediately to discuss your options. Speaking to an attorney is also advised as a recall is not your only option; if you have been injured by a hip device, you may have a legal claim for compensation for your injuries.

Keep in mind that device manufacturers’ structure recalls in such a way as to limit their legal liability or ask patients to waive their right to privacy and/or a lawsuit. A recall may require specific action by the patient in order to receive compensation. For this reason, speaking with an attorney is important. An experienced medical device lawyer will know the right questions to ask and how to quickly obtain the information. With statute limitations and settlement deadlines it is vitally important to know whether your hip implant device has been recalled as soon as possible.

The FDA Website has extensive and helpful information about recalled hip implants.
