A new report from Consumers Union shows much hasn’t changed in the ten years since the seminal Institute of Medicine report on medical errors was released. In short, medical errors are still widespread, and IOM’s estimate of 98,000 deaths by error every year is likely still accurate.

Most Americans probably don’t realize how prevalent medical errors are. But more people die from medical errors every year than diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or the flu.

With the nation embarking on a mission to insure all Americans and fix a broken health care system, it is obviously essential that keeping patients safe be the highest priority. Good medicine not only saves money, but saves lives.
