I have written many articles about the various distractions people engage in while driving. These include talking on the phone, texting, eating, changing the radio, putting on make-up; the list goes on and on. But, what I read recently is a new one – shaving while driving. I am not talking about a man shaving his beard.

It seems a woman was driving to Key West, Florida, with her ex-husband, when she rammed into a pick-up truck, the driver of which had slowed down to make a turn. The woman did not see the pick-up because she was shaving her bikini area while her ex-husband steered the car from the passenger side. After the accident, she fled the scene, went a half-mile up the road, and switch seats with her ex so it would appear as if he was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred. Was it because he felt guilty that she wrecked while giving him a little pleasure on the road? No, it wasn’t. Her “pubic display” was for another reason. When the Florida Highway Patrol caught up with the couple, she said she was “meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit.” I try not to judge someone’s personal life, but when the person acts irresponsibly and endangers the public in doing so, I feel entitled.

Fortunately, no one suffered more than minor injuries in this accident, but it is not over for the woman; she was charged with driving on a revoked license, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with no insurance. There is, yet another twist to this case. It seems the day before the accident, the woman was convicted of a DUI and driving with a suspended license. Her car was to be impounded and her driver’s license was revoked for five years.

This story has been getting a lot of press most likely due to its bizarre nature. I write about it not to cause further embarrassment (I have withheld her name, for instance); I write it because it is another example of how dangerous distracted driving can be. Taking your eyes, hands, and mind off the road is reckless behavior.
